The Top 10 Essential Oils for Beautiful Skin

8/24/2016

Ditch the toxins! An ancient skin care secret, essential oils can help promote a clear, radiant complexion and soften the signs of aging. Mother Nature approved!

Now is the time to purge chemicals from your skin care routine and rediscover your natural glow!

It's ironic, but many of the popular skin care and personal care products on store shelves will actually cause your skin (and you) to age faster, which will rob your beauty and your health.  This is because they contain toxic, synthetic chemicals.

For example, read my articles:
  • Take a Critical Look at Your Sunscreen
  • The Toxins in Antiperspirants
  • Toxins: Are They Making You Fat & Sick?

Many of the toxic chemicals in skin care products will enter your bloodstream and disrupt your endocrine (hormone) system.  This includes the thyroid, insulin (blood sugar), estrogens, testosterone, cortisol (stress hormone), and growth hormone. Some can be carcinogenic (cause cancer). Plus, many of the chemicals cause allergic reactions or irritation to the skin, eyes, or lungs.  Bad news!

The Environmental Working Group makes it their mission for consumers like you to know exactly what chemicals are in the products you bring into your home and how they may affect your health and the environment. Their Skin Deep cosmetics database is the world's largest safety reference tool for personal-care products for both adults and babies. I encourage you to check it out!

In contrast to synthetic chemicals, essential oils are the natural oils obtained from botanical plants.  Essential oils harness the incredible power of nature in a little bottle!  An ancient skin care secret, essential oils can:
  • help promote a clear-looking complexion,
  • soften the appearance of signs of aging, and
  • nurture healthy-looking hair and nails.
They can help protect and revitalize the appearance of your skin for a more radiant-looking you - with Mother Nature as your biggest helper!
In no particular order, here are my favorite essential oils for the skin:

Lavender

The Top 10 Essential Oils for Beautiful Skin

  • Lavender has a scent that’s a wonderful blend of fresh, floral, clean, and calm.  It is a wonderful oil that is soothing to the skin and is very popular in some of your favorite shampoos, lotions, or skin care products.  It's know to be very relaxing, a great beginner oil, and a must-have for every home.

  • Geranium is a very uplifting oil that includes the naturally occurring constituents citronellol and geraniol. It may help soothe and maintain the appearance of tender skin.

  • Frankincense is a great oil for meditation. In addition to elevated spiritual experiences, the benefits of Frankincense essential oil include maintaining healthy, radiant skin. It's perfect for a massage or after activity. Add Frankincense to your daytime lotion or night cream for a custom moisturizer that highlights your natural beauty. (See below for my easy facial serum recipe.)

  • Elemi, a close relative to Frankincense, has many similar properties, but a lower price tag. Yay!

  • Patchouli is very peaceful.  It may improve the appearance of dry, chapped skin. It includes the naturally occurring constituents patchoulol, bulnesene, and alphaguaiene.

  • Ylang-Ylang has a rich, sweet, floral scent that is calming, relaxing, and soothing. It can be massaged into the scalp to increase the appearance of healthy, shiny hair.

  • Rose essential oil is famous for improving skin texture.  Rose has a beautiful aroma that encourages feelings of positive self-reflection. Twenty-two pounds of rose petals are distilled for every 5-ml bottle of oil produced.

  • Myrrh has a long history of use in skin care for its moisturizing properties to cleanse dry skin. It was highly regarded in biblical times and has an aroma that brings a deeper sense of spirituality.

  • Tea Tree oil, also known as Melaleuca, is often used in skin care for its cleansing properties. Tea tree reduces the appearance of blemishes and is my #1 go-to when I have a pimple. It also helps maintain healthy looking hair and scalp, and you can apply to feet and toenails when needed.

  • Cedarwood essential oil is a great way to enhance your favorite beauty products. You’ll want to use it for its fresh, earthy aroma. Cedarwood does triple duty: Smooth skin by adding it to your favorite lotions and skin care products. Place a few drops in your shampoo and conditioner for shinier-looking hair. Or, create custom scents featuring Cedarwood as a base for your own signature scent. Try combining it with floral or citrus essential oils such as Neroli or Bergamot.
Use the essential oils that suit your particular needs. Because many essential oils are quite powerful, only a few drops are necessary per application.  Use a carrier oil for comfort on your skin.  My favorite carrier oil for the body is jojoba oil because it's nearly identical to the skin's own sebum (natural oil).

Essential oils:
When it comes to essential oils, quality really matters. I used to belong to a MLM company, but now I usually order from Eden's Garden, whose prices are much more reasonable (and I don't get any $ for saying that or recommending them, either.)
It's very simple to make your own nourishing facial serum!

Simply mix your favorite essential oils for skin care with a carrier oil tailored for the face. I use either organic tamanu oil or Rosehip seed oil for the carrier oil in my facial serum. Both are very nourishing and provide healing properties. See HERE for more detailed instructions.
