Happiness Starts with Glee! (Coconut Ghee)

6/15/2016

Happiness Starts with Glee! (Make you own Coconut Ghee) Glee a perfect description for the mixture of two wonderful, healthy fats (coconut oil + ghee). They are a delicious combo and a lovely, dense source of nutrients!

What is Glee, you ask?

  • First, it's a word to describe something that brings you great delight.
  • Secondly, it's a creative combination of the words "coconut oil & ghee".
  • So, it's a perfect description for the mixture of these two wonderful, healthy fats that taste delicious and are a lovely, dense source of nutrients!

My family made up the word "glee" at home to describe coconut oil + ghee, and it stuck.  I hope you use the term at your house, too!

Ghee, if you've never heard of it, is also known as Indian clarified butter and is commonly used in South Asian cuisine.  It's pure butterfat and tastes like rich, delicious, concentrated butter.  However, unlike butter, ghee does not contain the milk proteins (casein and whey) that cause problems in individuals who cannot tolerate dairy well.  It generally does not cause problems for people who are lactose intolerant, either.  Ghee is best when made from good, grass-fed butter. The bonus is that it still contains the lovely fat-soluble, antioxidant vitamins (A, D, E, and K2) that are found in grass-fed dairy.

Coconut oil is probably the most common tropical oil used in the US today and is one of the best cooking oils you can use. It is the oil extracted from coconut meat. It has been a staple cooking oil for thousands of years in tropical climates.  The medium chain fatty acids (MCT oil) found in coconut oil can boost the body’s metabolism, raise body temperatures, and help provide greater energy which can lead to weight loss.  Coconut oil is also rich in lauric acid, a nutrient that supports the body’s immune system. Coconut oil has amazing anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties. (read more)

When combined as Glee, you get to enjoy the benefits of both!

Use equal amounts of liquid ghee & coconut oil

How to make Glee (coconut ghee):

Simply mix melted ghee + melted coconut oil!
Then allow to cool.
I use a 50/50 ratio.

As long as your ghee is made properly (it's pure butterfat), your glee can be stored on a shelf in the pantry in a closed container. (See directions below.)

The coconut oil has a melting point of 76 degrees F, so naturally, your glee will be more liquid in the warm months and more solid when it's cooler. It's also fine refrigerated.

Glee is a marvelous fat to use everyday in your kitchen.  I do.  I regularly make a big batch, separate it into smaller glass containers, and freeze until ready to use.

Glee can be used just like butter or coconut oil - on it's own, solid or melted, whipped, or in stir-frying, baking, etc.  It's great to cook with at high temperatures because it has a naturally high smoke point and is resistant to oxidation.

My family also likes glee because they think that the ghee flavor is too strong on it's own, but with the coconut oil, it has just the right taste.

(I use coconut oil that is virtually flavorless; see below.)

Make ghee at home:

Follow my easy directions to make your own ghee at home from grass-fed butter!  It is super simple and saves a ton of money.

Then, use it as-is or make it into glee!

The best coconut oil:

If you're like me, you love coconut oil, but don't want everything tasting like coconut.  There's a solution for that!

I only buy Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil - it's the best!

If you want a lighter flavor, try either their organic "expeller pressed"  (my favorite) or the "100% pure coconut oil".  They're both great if you don't want a very coco-nutty taste.

Want to simply buy coconut ghee (glee)?

Pure Indian Foods PRIMALFAT Coconut Ghee is a 50/50 blend of organic grass-fed ghee and organic virgin coconut oil. YUM!

Whip it up!

On special occasions or holidays, I will whip the glee for a lovely presentation.

First, to get in the mood, enjoy this old 80's tune on YouTube and dance around in your kitchen a little:    :-)

Simple whipping directions:

Put your glee into a deep bowl.

Refrigerate fully.

Use an electric hand mixer to whip. This takes some muscle! It will be very hard at first, so keep pressing down and eventually it will start to soften and whip.

Isn't it beautiful!?

Enjoy!
The whipped glee here is featured on my recipe for Sandwich Rounds (which are great toasted).  They're grain and gluten-free, plus low-carb!

Lastly, glee is a combo of two healthy fats. YAY!  Are you wondering which are the healthy fats vs. the unhealthy fats?  And what makes the difference? See the Au Naturale Nutrition Guide to Choosing Fats & Oils.
