DIY Sea Salt Body Scrub: a Luxurious Spa Treatment at Home!

3/30/2017

Is your skin in need of a nice scrubbing? The purpose of a body scrub is to exfoliate the outermost layers of dead skin cells, revealing your softer, younger cells just below. But, there's no need to spend top-dollar at a spa when you can have this sea salt treatment at home.

Is your skin in need of a nice scrubbing? The purpose of a body scrub is to exfoliate the outermost layers of dead skin cells, revealing your softer, younger cells just below.  But, there's no need to spend top-dollar at a spa when you can have the same treatment at home.  It's something that can be romantic, too, if your sweetheart does the scrubbing!
Sea salt is sexy! When you use sea salt for your body scrub, you can benefit from the 84 lovely trace minerals found in natural sea salt.  It's like a little bit of the beach, but at your home. (Refined table salt is detrimental to the health of your body and your skin - don't use it.) I invite you to learn much more about sea salt in my article: Table Salt vs. Natural Sea Salts: What the Difference Means for your Health.  Consider sea salt a super-food for your whole body!

Avoid nasty toxic fragrances! I personally have had expensive body scrubs at the spa in the past, and while it was quite a luxury, I now know that I compromised my health because they contained synthetic fragrances. "Fragrance" is just a blanket term for "toxic brew"!  These artificial scents are found everywhere; in many type of products from baby items, to cleaning products, to personal care items. According to an EWG.org article, the average fragrance product tested contained 14 secret chemicals not listed on the label. Among them are chemicals associated with hormone disruption, allergic reactions, and many substances that have not been assessed for safety.  This salt scrub recipe you can easily make at home uses essential oils for its beautiful scents instead, hooray!

Sea Salt Scrub Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coarse sea salt or unscented epsom salts (or any combination) *
  • 1/2 cup of your favorite nourishing oil for the skin oil such as extra virgin olive oil, jojoba oil, or sweet almond oil **
  • About 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oils for the skin such as lavender, ylang-ylang, myrrh, frankincense, geranium, or rose. Peppermint would be fun and uplifting. ***

* Epsom salt's main benefit is that it provides your body with lovely magnesium sulfate.  If you have sore muscles, the magnesium helps them relax and feel relief from aches and pains. And don't be surprised if you feel a little sleep afterwards! The sulfur also helps your body detoxify.
(If you have quite sensitive skin, try a milder variety of the scrub by substituting coconut sugar for the salt. However, you'll miss out on the mineral benefits.)

** I do not recommend coconut oil for this - because it solidifies when below 76 degrees and can be bad for home plumbing.  Jojoba oil is my favorite. It's the closest oil to the skin's own sebum and won't clog pores. Olive oil is probably the most economical oil to use. Plus, it's loaded with lovely antioxidants, fatty acids, and vitamins that the skin loves.

*** Citrus essential oils, like orange, are lovely in a body scrub, too. However, be aware that your skin may be more sensitive to the sun afterward.

Sea Salt Scrub Directions:

  1. Put on some nice spa-like music that sets the mood for luxury.
  2. Mix the ingredients together in a bowl.
  3. You may want to soften your skin first, if needed, by soaking in a warm tub.
  4. Sit on the edge of your bathtub or stand in your shower (water not running.)
  5. Scrub your skin gently.  Use a washcloth, some cheap gloves, a soft bristle brush, or an exfoliating mitt, if you like.  Avoid your face and avoid any cuts and scrapes, as the salt will sting.
  6. Take your time scrubbing each each body part.  Enjoy the home spa experience!
  7. When you're done, rinse off in a warm shower.
  8. Repeat once a week for soft, glowing, nourished skin!
  9. This recipe also makes lovely gifts to share.
